This exhibition revisits the work of these designers to show the development of their career over the last 20 years or so. Their work will be represented by their designs at graduation, THEN, alongside recent work, NOW. Zeev Aram opened his first store on London’s Kings Road, Chelsea, in 1964 at a time when there was very little in the way of modern furniture on the market. He had a real passion for design and was the first to introduce the works of designers such as Carlo Scarpa, A and P.G. Castiglioni, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier and V. Magistretti to the UK market. These were truly radical designs at the time and it may have seemed a gamble to show these works as part of a commercial venture. Aram however, believed that here were pieces that were important, beautifully designed and well manufactured that would stand the test of time. And so they have. It will run from 11th March to 24th April 2011. It's an exhibition of fifteen designers who graduated in the late '80s and early '90s and whose designs were shown THEN, at the http://www.aram.co.ukAram Designs Graduate Exhibitions - revisiting the work of these designers NOW. The designers are: Jane Atfield Sebastian Bergne Adam Brinkworth Konstantin Grcic Thomas Heatherwick Victoria Jessen - Pike David Keech Wakako Kishimoto Tom Lloyd Kevin McCullagh Corin Mellor Peter Naumann Ben Panayi Luke Pearson Sonya Winner Rediscovering my THEN pieces has been a catalytic experience. Challenging in that some of them were complex and needed to be repaired and re-assembled (no CAD drawings to refer to!); and reassuring in that they still sit comfortably with my work today. One of the messages of this exhibition must surely be to never throw anything away. Here is a taster - a drawing I did back then (the drawings were as important as the pieces themselves). As expected, Zaha Hadid Architects took the prize for the MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome. Of the nominees, MAXXI was mid-table in terms of cost, but arguably the most striking and iconic looking outcome. In their words, the architects' vision for the museum was to create a ‘field of buildings’ rather than 'an object'. As seen from above this appears to have been achieved. The site is a tangle of linear forms that lie above, below and amongst one another, culminating in the bold cantilevered gallery that has already become the resounding image of the museum. The structure displays timber finishes, product colours and beautiful forms that merge acoustic piano and electronic cello with new concept AV equipment. This end to the Polaroid photograph is a reminder that although a classic, loved by one and all, it is ultimately a product, whose longevity is dictated by supply and demand. Simultaneously historic (originally made in the Renaissance as utilitarian ‘all purpose pants’ in Turin), always symbolic of their era (think the ‘Rebel Without a Cause’ youth rebellion they characterised in 1950s America, or the skin-tight drainpipes that signified you were a true British mod in the swinging 60s); jeans are the ultimate in eternally modern design. It is interesting to note that the name Epson was derived from the idea of the company being the offspring ("son") of the EP-101, the world's smallest electronic printer (EP) which was created in 1964. To be working closely with one of the most respected and environmentally aware technology companies in the world is something we are very proud of. From biodiversity projects in http://www.epson.co.uk/Explore-Epson/Culture/Sponsorships/Portugal-Biodiversity-Project/1223289604677Portugal, to http://www.epson.co.uk/Explore-Epson/Innovation/Digital-Ice-technology/1223291667271Digital Ice Technology, Epson have a very rich and deep approach to design, technology, the environment and social responsibility.
