THEN and NOW

The THEN - NOW show is an exhibition at the Aram Gallery that I'm very happy to be a part of. It will run from 11th March to 24th April 2011.
It's an exhibition of fifteen designers who graduated in the late '80s and early '90s and whose designs were shown THEN, at the Aram Designs Graduate Exhibitions - revisiting the work of these designers NOW. The designers are:

Thomas Heatherwick
Victoria Jessen - Pike
David Keech
Wakako Kishimoto
Tom Lloyd
Kevin McCullagh
Corin Mellor

Rediscovering my THEN pieces has been a catalytic experience. Challenging in that some of them were complex and needed to be repaired and re-assembled (no CAD drawings to refer to!); and reassuring in that they still sit comfortably with my work today. One of the messages of this exhibition must surely be to never throw anything away.
Here is a taster - a drawing I did back then (the drawings were as important as the pieces themselves). For the 3D work, you'll have to come to the exhibition...
... and I can show you this one as it won't be in the show. A macquette for sculptural lighting, featuring among other things; a spectacle lens, an M10 bolt and scraps from the workshop floor. It was part of a series of about 20 that were exhibited at the RCA show, several of which (including this one) were sold privately. One of them (maybe this one?) ended up in the private collection of Roger de Grey, something of which, you can imagine, I am proud.
They were all made entirely from junk and scrap from bins; this was 20 odd years ago; nowadays of course, we call it recycled materials - fascinating (looking through old catalogues and exhibition labels) that we didn't really use that term then. One of the many poignant issues that the THEN - NOW Show throws up.
