In The Know (2)
Posted by: Martin Klute on 23rd Nov 2007 in In The Know

Our occasional series where great design objects are described by those who know them best; their owners.
Jazz musician, architect and Labour councillor Martin Klute talks about Yamaha's SLB 200 bass:

What is it? Yamaha 'silent' double bass.

Tell me more... A 'stick' bass, or double bass without a body.

Why did you buy it? It was love at first sight. I saw one and I had to have one.

About its looks? Quite ethereal. I like the way the curve of the body is suggested and then tails off into nothingness.

Technical advantages? So much more portable than a traditional bass, and doesn't have any problems with feedback on stage. Stronger and less prone to accidents.

Emotional appeal? Looks very high-tech. Tight, punchy sound. Nice to play.

Could it be improved? String length is a bit short. Also, the on-board pickup is not very good. I use my own. It would be nice to be able to plug my pickup into the on-board electronics.

Not recommended for... Traditionalists, cellists, banjo players, or Brian Iddenden.
