A Cool Reception
Posted by: Keech on 30th Nov 2009 in Keechdesign News

We have just designed, built and fitted a stylish yet highly functional concierge/ reception desk at 15 Portland Place, London W1. What we feel is unique about this kind of project, is that the whole process, from client discussions and initial sketches, through to manufacture and fit-out, is handled by us.

With bespoke furniture and fit-out installations, there can often be a loss of momentum or communication between the designer and the manufacturer and site worker. Often due to the fact that they are very different groups of people with very little in common.
We are happy (and proud) to say that design, detailing and physical build are one in the same to us. How can you design an acrylic cladding component without a very clear understanding of how it will be made, transported to site and fitted?
I like to call this process 'designing from the inside out'. To combine rock-solid knowledge of of construction and manufacture with acute sensitivity towards gorgeous colours, textures and materials is a very powerful combination.
By coincidence I am delivering a lecture to interior design students at the University Of Portsmouth this week on the crucial role that models, mock-ups and prototypes play in the design process. Design students must understand that CAD models and computer drawings only tell half the story. The process of real construction is the best way to understand any piece of design, even if it is just a rough mock-up in card, paper or clay.
Anyway, I seem to have done a 'design tangent' and strayed from the subject of 15 Portland Place. You can find more about this lovely building here...
