Dieter Rams

The work of Dieter Rams, currently showing at The Design Museum, London. Exhibition running until 9th March. Lots of good stuff here, including footage of the man himself in conversation with Deyan Sudjic.

You know, it's all very nice, but couldn't it do with a bit more colour and perhaps some decoration?

Dieter Rams: 10 Principles Of Good Design

Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is long-lasting.
Good design is thorough down to the last detail.
Good design is environmentally friendly.
Good design is as little design as possible.

Seems obvious doesn't it? But how much design in our cluttered modern existence would fail to satisfy even half of these? Although I suspect that manuscript illuminators and rococo architects might disagree with the last one.

Pictured at top: Dieter's P1 pocket record player for Braun - 1959 (and you thought the iPod concept was new?), and below the Braun SK 61 (from 1961 but still looking bang up to the minute don't you think?)

FACTOID: Rams's ET66 calculator is thought to have strongly influenced the iPhone calculator app.
