What You got?
Posted by: Keech on 14th Oct 2009 in Opinion

Products are everywhere. Branded products, designed by designers and made by manufacturers. We love them dearly, lavish our hard-earned money on them, and keep them like fetishes or talismans in our houses, in our pockets, and (in some cases) in the bedside cabinet. They range from objects of worship to highly sophisticated tools without which our life would be difficult.
So what you got? What products do you own that you cannot live without, or that you simply adore for the sheer sake of it? If you take a pen and write down the first five that come to mind, it's a fair bet that they are your true faves. Here are mine...

1. Apple iPhone 3GS

Ergonomically as satisfying as any gorgeous pebble you'd find on the beach, with the touch interface to end them all. What other product can seamlessly synchronise all your business calendars, contacts and the other mountains of stuff with such joyful elegance? AND teach your kids how to recognise all the British bird songs, AND where the planets are in the sky at any given time. It's apps, apps, apps. Yes - I'm a fan.

2. King 3B trombone

Reckoned to be the industry standard weapon of the professional jazz 'bone player. With the ability to wail, moan, scream or sing like a diva in all registers, it takes some beating. Cool and now iconic design features include that lovely counterweight, stylishly curved bell stay, and tapered lead tube to the mouthpiece. Everyone has an iPod, but a King 3B looks cooler on the street.

3. Loake shoes

A black pair. Plain uppers with minimalist styling. It's all about the construction. That's welted construction. The soles are stitched to the upper by means of a 'welt' or strip of leather, meaning that in skilled hands they can be endlessly repaired and re-soled, and you'll never need to visit the shoe recycling bin outside Safeways again. Next to these a trainer looks like a clown's shoe. (Don't worry I've got plenty of trainers too)
What's more I love them because they represent the once proud factory manufacturing culture of my home town.

4. Rega Planar 3 turntable

Still considered a classic by audiophiles. No design compromises here as much of the money is invested in the high quality motor. The solid glass bed is a nice touch too, and the whole package is a nice antidote to the over-styled and crappy sounding iPod docks with which the market is flooded.

Best not to use it for scratching...

5. The Audubon bird call
(pictured at top)

This really is a beautiful little product. About the size of your average key fob, and intelligently crafted in zinc and solid birch, this little baby emits an incredible spectrum of very real bird sounds. And let's face it, it's always nice to be surrounded by songbirds. You even get a tiny container of rosin, cleverly packaged in a colour coordinated pill capsule borrowed from the medical industry.
