Five of the best subcultural adaptions of standard products.

1. Hot Rod
2. Mod Parka
3. Punk Safety Pin
4. Cafe Racer
5. Scratch Turntable

1.

Take a venerable standard American production car, chop it, lower it, cook it, and then cram as much horse power under the hood as humanly possible. I'll see you out on the strip...

2.

Originally used by the American military. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think those GIs had a luxurious fur trim on the hood or "The Who" painted on the back in white emulsion.

3.

Who'd have thought that such a humble, household item from the baby bag could come to symbolize subversive fashion and counter-culture?

4.

In the 60s renowned British marques were hybridized in garden sheds and garages, to bring the race track to the street. Triumph engine in Norton frame a favourite (Triton), or even the sacrilegious Vincent/ Norton approach (Norvin).

5.

Surely it was never designed to do that?

That beautiful shot of the rod out on the salt flat was kindly lent to us by retinal neurophysiology scientist Bryan Jones. You can see his superb blog at

It's full of great images and is a real treat.

Skateboarders riding swimming pools is another good one! Cool article by the way.
