The 49th Degree

Working closely with Form Design & Build (as we often do) we have just completed an exciting design and fit-out contact for Isles Of Scilly clothing brand 49º. The new flagship store opened last Friday, showing that Form have once again won and delivered a great, design-led project, and are proving that the recession is not all it's cracked up to be. At least not in Cornwall that is...
The Isles of Scilly are a stunning group of Islands 28 miles off the tip of Cornwall. As such, completing a retail interiors contract presents a number of logistical hurdles, which thanks to Form's SAS type operations unit, we managed to overcome.
Everything had to be manufactured on the mainland, shipped over, then re-assembled on site. Site time is limited and all works had to be completed in roughly a two-week window, with the site team taking up residence on the Island. The only (non-freight) access at this time of year is via very small aircraft or helicopter.
Such a project requires very careful co-ordination and understanding between designer and the site and manufacturing teams, plus a strong stomach, and a love of aviation in its rawest sense (no problem for designers of course as we love aircraft of avery conceivable type). Everything must fit and work first time, and there is very little room for error - there's no popping back to the mainland for a sheet of plywood.
49º briefed us to redesign an extension to the store rear, as well as to oversee interior furniture, display and point-of-sale material. As part of the project, we created a bespoke display system, lighting scheme, interior and exterior signage and branding, as well a facelift for the exterior.
49º founder Terry Ward says that his company's most popular design, the IOS graphics, has not been synonymous with the 49º brand, and that part of our task was to raise awareness that the two are connected.
He says; 'What we realised was that a lot of people were looking for the IOS brand but not realising where they could get it. They'd see the IOS brand but didn't tie it up with the shop. The design team helped us to tie those up together through signage and branding.'
The store is only just open, so we are waiting for beautiful photographs which we'll post in due course. In the meantime, here are some design works, starting with the first rapid site sketch...

Some of the many floor plans and lighting diagrams...

And some more of 49º promotional photography to give a flavour of the brand...
