Unboxing Clever
Posted by: Keech on 2nd Dec 2008 in Opinion

What exactly is unboxing? It's an amateur video of someone taking a product (usually a piece of technology, and more often than not a laptop, mobile phone or camera) out of its packaging, for the first time. The video is then posted on a video-sharing site such as YouTube for all to see. Design, sociology, psychology and good old geeky fun all play their part, and in a rather odd way, it's compelling viewing.

Rather than chuck this in in the nerdy bin, I'm taking note, because according to Iain Mackenzie, Newsbeat technology reporter for the BBC's website;

One of the most viewed clips is a three-minute film of a Macbook Air laptop being taken out of its box. The video has been watched almost half-a-million times.

Ask yourself why we spend so much time and effort wrapping birthday and Christmas presents, and why the Japanese have virtually turned it into an art form, and like me, you'll begin to understand why unboxing is so popular. The fact that it is mainly linked to technolgy products is also understandable. These products have highly evolved and often beautiful packaging, and it takes time to get to the precious objects within - it's a process.

I've witnessed another, more extreme form of unboxing before. When my children were younger and confronted with a pile of presents on Christmas morning, they would go into a frenzy of unwrapping, hardly pausing for a second to see what they had just opened before moving excitedly on to the next one. They were ONLY interested in the "unboxing" part because that was the most exciting moment.

I think unboxing will catch on. It is vicarious pleasure; we can experience the primeval thrill of opening something for the first time without actually having to buy it! Come to think of it that really does make sense. It's the best bit of technology ownership; the rest is all downhill with the arduous tasks of reading the manual, product registration, the disappointment when it gets damaged, not to mention the sad reflection on how much the thing cost in the first place.

You can see plenty of unboxing videos on YouTube

And here are some ideas for unboxing videos that I haven't seen yet, but would like to:

1. A drumkit

2. A kit car

3. A one-person submarine

4. A box of tricks

5. Pandora's Box

The two images here are of the current top celebrity of unboxing, Apple's incredibly slim Macbook Air.
