At Last

At last - a mobile phone that I really like the look of. According to friends I'm officially a phone tart (what designer isn't?); regularly changing and upgrading handsets in pursuit of, well... something or other.

I recently took part in a workshop event called UK Design In China, organised by Creative Connexions and Tecatech. Part of the workshop involved the design and modelling of your ultimate mobile phone, in super-fast time. The exercise forced us to condense our myriad expectations and It became clear that physical form is most problematic, with most of us attempting to get away from the conventional rectangular, forward-facing layout.

The handset pictured here is still at concept stage, but I'm first in the queue. It is by Bikram Mittra, a recent RCA graduate. You can see more of his superb work here.

Born in 1980 in London, Bikram studied Exhibition Design at the National Institute of Design, India. He then went on to do an MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art, London under the tutorship of Ron Arad, Kenneth Grange, Michael Marriott, Tom Lloyd and Christoph Behling, graduating in 2007.

Mainly working with products and furniture, Bikram’s other work areas have included exhibit spaces, experimental architecture as well as interactive communication experiences.

Attempting to merge research, content and narrative with the rigors of production and technology, Bikram believes design is a process of creating meaningful interactions rather than just a creative whim.

Of the phone concept, Bikram says:
To combine a touchscreen with the tactility of real buttons. Hence all the 'hard' number buttons sit on top of an LCD panel. In effect, each button can have a different 'label' above it depending on what application is being run. The touchscreen part of the phone is used for large 'touchable graphics' such as for answering a call or for other applications such as when using the camera or gaming.
