Duet (Ladies In Mercedes)
Posted by: David Keech on 21st Nov 2008 in Opinion

Saw this chair at 100% Design in Tokyo. I don't know much about it other than that it's designed by Shiro Nakada and Studio Mebius of Tokyo and that its material is listed as "special painted wood".

Duet (Ladies In Mercedes)? Strange name for a chair perhaps, but that's where it gets more interesting for me.

Ladies In Mercedes is a track from the album Duets by Carla Bley and Steve Swallow (recorded New York, 1988). I've seen Carla Bley and Steve Swallow on at least one occasion and was completely blown away by the gospel-driven fire of Bley's trombonist, Gary Valenti.

Those of you who know me well will know that jazz has been my great passion since early teens, and I've always been fascinated by the areas where music, the other arts and design cross-pollinate. From the profound such as Nicolas Poussin's modal paintings, to the superficial; Honda's Japanese car of the year 2002, called Jazz; there are plenty of examples.

Studio Mobius's website shows examples of their interior/ architectural and furniture work. There is a picture of Shiro Nakada with his tenor, and an albeit under construction jazz section. So I'm not the only jazz musician who runs a design company!

Pictured below is Seven Steps To Heaven furniture by Studio Mobius. And now you won't be surprised if I tell you that Seven Steps To Heaven is an album recorded in 1963 by Miles Davis...
