In The Know (11)
Posted by: Daniel Cane on 10th May 2010 in In The Know

Our occasional series where great design objects are described by those who know them best; their owners.
Keechdesign product designer Daniel Cane shows us an underwhelmingly excellent piece of technology...

What is it? This is my Rane SL interface, there are many like it but this one is mine.

Tell me more... It's part of a vinyl emulation system which includes software, special timecoded records and a lot of phono leads. With it you can play MP3s through your turntables just like you had the music on vinyl.

Why did you buy it? Mine was actually an extraordinarily generous and insightful gift. However, I was saving up (£400+) to get it anyway, as owning records had become a burden.

About its looks? Underwhelming.
It serves as a junction box linking the computer, turntables and mixer so rarely need to be touched or seen. Consequently, it has a 'built in a garden shed with bits from Tandy' aesthetic.

Technical advantages? Numerous.
Do: Play any sound recording you can get your hands on (legitimately or otherwise), play music you've made yourself, sell or give away all your records.
Don’t: Worry about all the trappings of owning records. Pops and skips, record shop staff, cigarette & alcohol accidents, the sheer size, weight and cost of them.

Emotional appeal? Little.
Although, the system makes listening to music even more convenient than iTunes, so it has improved my quality of life a great deal.

Could it be improved? As always.
An opportunity has been missed with the ID. The system that it is part of has expanded vinyl emulation from a niche market, into something adopted by millions of people including recording artists even your granny has heard of. As something that has become so important, it should really have a more iconic look.

Not recommended for... Pressing plants, dubplate cutters or anyone who confuses being a music lover, with being a music owner.

Editor's comment: ...and I think it's also worth a 'compare and contrast' with our very first "in The Know" article here...
