The Music Of Design

I've been at my Alma Mater the RCA again. In the Design Products department with Yamaha; the second such project (you can see the first here). Yamaha set the brief and closely monitor and advise the students as the project unfolds, aided by selected visiting lecturers and speakers, of which I was one. By the way, if you're not familiar with the term Alma Mater it derives from latin, refers to ones old college and means something to the effect of "bounteous mother" - a resonable description of the RCA from my point of view...
Such collaborations give students a hands-on opportunity to tackle a real industry brief and hear it from the client's point of view. Both projects came from deep within Yamaha's psyche, and allowed the students a shot at genuine recognition - making the relationship valuable for all parties. You can read more at Design Week.
What struck me here (as in the last project) was the richness and depth of the students' thinking. The RCA really is an inspiring place to be - a hotbed of creativity, for want of a better metaphor. One of the many striking ideas that came out of this project is Furniture For the Musical Human, by Vahakn Matossian-Gehlhaar (pictured above). Those speaker-like appendages were beautifully made too.
To get an even bigger dose of RCA creativity, make sure you attend at least one of the following shows.
SHOW RCA Sculpture, 15-25 Howie Street, London SW11 4AS
Open from 28 May - 7 June, 11 am - 6pm
The graduating Sculpture students' exhibition will take place in the recently re-furbished Sculpture building in Battersea. Praised by Antony Gormley for its generous space and light, the new premises will prove ideal for large-scale work, as well as mixed-media installations.
Further exhibitions take place at:
Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2EU
SHOW RCA ONE
Open 29 May - 7 June, 11am - 8pm
(Please note that the exhibition will close early, at 6pm, on the final day of the exhibition, June 7)
Features work by students from the Fine Art courses of Painting, Photography and Printmaking and Applied Art - Ceramics and Glass, Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery. This is a great opportunity for the public to buy work from emerging contemporary artists and makers before they are snapped up by galleries and collectors. I know this to be true, as I've done it myself - don't leave your wallets at home!
SHOW RCA Fashion: 10 June, 4pm & 7pm
Fashion students present their final collections in two catwalk shows open to the public. Includes menswear, womenswear, knitwear, accessories and footwear.
Public shows admission price: £12 for 4pm and £25 for 7pm (includes a glass of champagne and canapes).
Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling 020 7590 4566 or on-line here.
SHOW RCA TWO
Open 26 June - 5 July, 11am - 8pm (closed 3 July)
(Please note that the exhibition will close early, at 5pm, on 30th June, 1st July, and 5th July)
The final part of the graduate shows includes work by students from the following courses: Animation, Architecture, Communication Art & Design, Conservation, Critical and Historical Studies, Design Products, Design Interactions, Fashion Footwear and Accessories, History of Design, Industrial Design Engineering, Textiles and Vehicle Design.
Some work will be for sale or commission.
Free admission
Tube: High Street Kensington/South Kensington, Buses: 9, 10, 52, 452
Or if the recession hasn't got to you yet and you're in a cab, ask the cabby to drop you off at the Albert Hall.
