In The Know (7)
Posted by: Yoichiro Hatanaka on 17th Dec 2008 in In The Know

Our occasional series where great design objects are described by those who know them best; their owners.
Yoichiro Hatanaka is currently working with us as an intern. He is a product design student at Central St. Martins.

Technophiles will know that this year is the 40th anniversary of the computer mouse, so what better way to celebrate it than to talk about its progeny...

What is it? Wacom Intuos Pen Tablet

Tell me more... A pen tablet is basically a pen-shaped mouse. Once you calibrate the tablet to your computer, wherever you point the pen onto the tablet becomes the position of the cursor on your computer screen.

Why did you buy it? I've always liked and wanted to learn digital-rendered design sketches. Digital rendering allows me to be more experimental with colours and shading since I can "undo" if I don't like it, or make mistakes. When you get used to it, it's much quicker than using pens and markers, and also saves sheets of paper.

About its looks? Thin and simple design. You can see by the look of it that it's very easy to use.

Technical advantages? The pen does everything that a standard mouse can do, but you can move the cursor much more quickly and more accurately like you do with a writing pen. Also depending on software, you can change thickness and darkness of the line you draw by applying different pen pressures onto the tablet.

Emotional appeal? There were two choices of colour; crystal grey and crystal silver. I chose the grey one, because it looked more "professional".

Could it be improved? The keys on the tablet are not labelled because they are customisable in the "tablet properties" menu. But because they are changeable I often forget which keys are for what functions. There should be some kind of interface that reminds users the key contexts.

Not recommended for... Making Hayao Miyazaki films.

Editor's comment: Here is an example of Yoichiro's rendering work using the pen tablet:
