And the fact that they look like miniature cities, with tiny roads, expressways and buildings. I'm not the only one to see the connection; a recent TV licensing advert by Abbott Mead Vickers had us zooming into a PCB metropolis.
I think the beauty lies in the fact that there is no "design" in them at all, just pure logic and function. In every place that I've ever worked, from college to my present office, I've always had PCBs dotted around the place. Some people like porcelain figurines or cut-glass ornaments, but on my shelf I like a nice bit of electrical guts from a transistor radio.
