New Designers 2008
Posted by: David Keech on 16th Jul 2008 in Creative Report

We visited Part 2 of the show, at The Business Design Centre in London last week and spent an inspiring afternoon looking at a particularly broad spectrum of fresh design talent. Equally inspiring was the professional and confident way in which the students talked about their work. We'll feature our pick of the bunch later, but first, more about the show...

The Foremost Event In Graduate Design

Matthew Hilton opened Part 2 of the 23rd New Designers exhibition on 9th July, presenting awards for excellence and exceptional talent at what is, without doubt, the foremost event in graduate design. (Cath Kidston opened Part 1 on 2nd July).

Now in its 23rd year, the two-part exhibition regularly attracts in excess of 17,000 people as it introduces some 4000, young designers to the attention of the public and professional visitors. It is the unrivalled launchpad for the design stars of tomorrow, and every year the enormous collective talent of the exhibitors never fails to impress retailers, curators, buyers, prospective employers and agents by generating sales and private commissions.

New Designers Part 2 displays final degree projects in furniture, product design, architecture, interior and spatial design, model making, graphics, animation and illustration. The UK's design courses are feeding new ideas and inspiration to every area of culture, lifestyle, the high street and the wider economy.

One Year On: an opportunity to purchase and commission unique work

In addition to the fresh new talent, New Designers also promotes the work of 45 selected design start-ups who have established their own business in the past 12 months. This year, One Year On, was curated by Thorsten van Elten, who chose a diverse range of design entrepreneurs which include bespoke furniture, cutting edge graphics, trend-setting homewares, amongst others - reflecting the design disciplines presented in Part 2.

History of New Designers 2008

1985, Peta Levi MBE presented Young Designers at the RIBA. It represented emerging design talent and showcased some 150 individual designers.

1986 A new exhibition venue opened in London, the Business Design Centre (BDC), to promote design enterprise and excellence with ideas for promoting emerging design talent already in the planning.
Andrew Morris, Sales and Marketing Director of the BDC, together with Peter York, the then head of marketing at the Design Council, created the "Graduate Designers for Industry" event, opened by Sir Terence Conran at the Business Design Centre.

Incidentally, I exhibited my graduate work back in 1987. It was a standard lamp based around a flourescent tube and constructed from steel and copper pipe. Looking around this year's show I felt like a true veteran.

1988 - Both events shared similar aims and in 1988 the Business Design Centre invited Young Designers to combine forces with Graduate Designers for Industry and The New Designers exhibition opened at the Business Design Centre as a national showcase of the best young designers graduating from design courses throughout the UK. In its expanded format, it embraced a multitude of design disciplines ranging from industrial products, lighting and furniture to contemporary applied arts, jewellery and fashion textiles.

Until the early 1990s Peta Levi was commissioned by the Business Design Centre, to take the exhibition forward and to enhance the growing reputation of young British design talent at New Designers to an increasing audience of professional and public visitors.

From this time the Upper Street Events has been evolving and developing New Designers. This dedicated team has grown New Designers reputation, attracting sponsorship and support from the creative industries and commerce and widespread media interest in emerging design talent.

2006 Celebrating 21 years, The Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Gordon Brown, MP opens New Designers. He said, "New Designers is now a British institution; people look to it for the creative talent it produces. New Designers is unrivalled in Europe in its scope, in its scale, and in its size; in its ability to attract companies and people who are looking to hire designers in the future and I believe this is one of the most important exhibitions."

2008 - New Designers successfully brings together education, private and public enterprises and the media and is a pivotal event for all involved in design. Now some 4,000 graduating designers present their creative excellence at New Designers is see as the most important showcase for prospective employers, buyers, galleries, studios and public visitors who are seeking the UK's most talented new designers. New Designers provides a crucial platform for the nation's graduate designers to meet and engage with the industry and give them the tangible opportunity to kick-start their careers.

This year's event is in memory of Peta Levi MBE 1939 ? 2008 who played a crucial role in establishing New Designers and whose life was dedicated to supporting young creative talent.

Below is Max Frommeld, Ravensbourne College of Design & Communication, BA Hons, Product & Furniture Design. Max is winner of The BDC New Designer of the Year Part 2

Judges citation: Max showed a delightful and surprising level of invention. His ideas were imaginative, his materials satisfyingly hi-tech, and his execution had real charm; a raw design performance.
Winner's remarks: I can only say thank you. I really feel appreciative of all the interest in my work. I hope I can sustain the quality of the work I produce and ultimately I would like to work on my own designs in a studio environment.
