Where I Work
Posted by: Kadmin on 14th Sep 2009 in Keechdesign News

Keechdesign article in issue 72 of New Design Magazine - 'Where I Work' feature. Here is the text followed by some shots of the office that were used.
Location. I'm tempted to say that word three times. That's what it's all about for me though - the office is on Great Portland Street, in Fitzrovia to be precise. Walking distance from both the crazy buzz of Soho and the aloof coolness of Mayfair. For me, design is about brain food; and there's an awful lot of that about in central London these days.
I love the personal symmetries too. My first ever design job (in 1991) was at Norman Foster's old office just a few doors down from this place. And when I was a boy in the early 70s, the Post Office Tower (now called BT Tower) was a much-admired icon of my visual landscape, like the Airfix Spitfire or the Raleigh Chopper. As I look up from my desk and out of the window - there it stands, as iconic as ever. It feels like coming home.
And here are some things in those photographs that help me design my way through a typical day:
1. Musical instruments. Good to have around, good to play.
2. The work of Eduardo Paolozzi
3. Lots of natural light.
4. Big, bassy hi-fi speakers.
5. The Post Office Tower.
6. Books
7. Cultural flotsam and jetsam
8. Like-minded individuals

I love the BT/ Post Office/ Telecom tower or whatever you want to call it. It's a real London icon and a great piece of design.
