In The Know (3)
Posted by: James Johnson on 8th Jan 2008 in In The Know

Our occasional series where great design objects are described by those who know them best; their owners.
Designer James Johnson talks about a classic piece of automotive design:

What is it? Land Rover Series III

Tell me more... This one was originally owned by the coastguard

Why did you buy it? To get up a steep hill

About its looks? Beautifully square

Technical advantages? Has a crank to start it when the battery runs flat and will drive up a 45 degree slope

Emotional appeal? Big version of a small toy and also smells strongly of petrol

Could it be improved? Only does 11miles to the gallon, so yes just a bit.

Not recommended for... Evel Knievel stunts over buses

Editor's note:
Production of the land Rover Series III ran from 1971 to 1985, and during this period the 1,000,000th Land Rover rolled out of the factory (in 1976).
The first Land Rover was designed in 1947 by Maurice Wilks, then chief designer at Rover.
