4D
Posted by: David Keech on 11th Aug 2008 in Creative Report
We spotted Henry Bagshawe's 4D coffee table at this year's New Designers show (see previous blog posts 16th and 18th July for full details.) It is one of those pieces that is simply impossible to walk past without taking a closer look. Very effective use of laminated plywood, and variable positioning from two nicely detailed perpendicular hinges.

Henry Bagshawe describes the 4D table:
4D is a contemporary extending coffee table designed for the modern, smaller living room environment. Its smooth extending action is innovative and simple to use.
The ?double extending?design allows for three separate configurations and therefore three different table surface areas, 800x500mm closed, 1200x500mm half extended and 1600x500 fully extended.
The table tops and legs are constructed solely from laminated strips of birch plywood. The corner hinges are cut directly from the timber and intergrated into the design, providing a strong, durable joint and an aesthetically pleasing decorative feature.
This initial design, handcrafted from birch plywood is priced at 495 GBP however the simple profile shapes of the construction lend themselves to higher levels of production thus significantly reducing the unit cost.
