More on the upcoming THEN-NOW Show
11th March - 24th April 2011, (as in previous article)
The THEN-NOW Show is an exhibition of 15 designers who were originally amongst the graduates selected by Zeev Aram to take part in the Aram Design’s Annual Graduate Shows in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This exhibition revisits the work of these designers to show the development of their career over the last 20 years or so. Their work will be represented by their designs at graduation, THEN, alongside recent work, NOW.
Zeev Aram opened his first store on London’s Kings Road, Chelsea, in 1964 at a time when there was very little in the way of modern furniture on the market. He had a real passion for design and was the first to introduce the works of designers such as Carlo Scarpa, A & P.G. Castiglioni, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier and V. Magistretti to the UK market. These were truly radical designs at the time and it may have seemed a gamble to show these works as part of a commercial venture. Aram however, believed that here were pieces that were important, beautifully designed and well manufactured that would stand the test of time. And so they have.

THEN and NOW
Posted by: Keech on 3rd Feb 2011 in Keechdesign News
The THEN - NOW show is an exhibition at the Aram Gallery that I'm very happy to be a part of. It will run from 11th March to 24th April 2011.
It's an exhibition of fifteen designers who graduated in the late '80s and early '90s and whose designs were shown THEN, at the Aram Designs Graduate Exhibitions - revisiting the work of these designers NOW. The designers are:
Jane Atfield
Sebastian Bergne
Adam Brinkworth
Konstantin Grcic
Thomas Heatherwick
Victoria Jessen - Pike
David Keech
Wakako Kishimoto
Tom Lloyd
Kevin McCullagh
Corin Mellor
Peter Naumann
Ben Panayi
Luke Pearson
Sonya Winner
Rediscovering my THEN pieces has been a catalytic experience. Challenging in that some of them were complex and needed to be repaired and re-assembled (no CAD drawings to refer to!); and reassuring in that they still sit comfortably with my work today. One of the messages of this exhibition must surely be to never throw anything away.
Here is a taster - a drawing I did back then (the drawings were as important as the pieces themselves). For the 3D work, you'll have to come to the exhibition...

Interior at FIRA
Posted by: Keech on 24th Nov 2010 in Keechdesign News
We designed the new look interior for FIRA's headquarters (FIRA are the Furniture Industry Research Association). The large foyer area is now fully up and running and boasts an exciting new showcase for furniture design and innovation. For more on FIRA look here. And for more about how we tackled this project look here.
We kept as much of the original 1960's timber architecture as intact as possible, and focussed on bold use of corporate colours and clear functionality of the space. Here are some recent shots of the finished scheme:

Yamaha, IFA Berlin 2010
Posted by: Keech on 10th Sep 2010 in Keechdesign News
Here are some shots of our work with Yamaha for IFA 2010 in Berlin. We worked with Yamaha designers to create this 4 metre tall sculptural structure exploring the themes of 'the shape of music', 'the touch of music' and 'music in colour', which underpin Yamaha's powerful new design-led audio visual products and branding.
The structure displays timber finishes, product colours and beautiful forms that merge acoustic piano and electronic cello with new concept AV equipment. You may also notice the five horizontal divisions that symbolize the musical stave, with the objects sitting on it like musical notation.
The installation was built in the UK by our manufacturing partners Form, and had to be created in their Cornwall workshops in carefully designed kit form, then assembled on site like a giant jigsaw puzzle.

Made For Make
Posted by: Rose Brown on 16th Apr 2010 in Keechdesign News

If you are not yet familiar with Make Architects now is the time to seek them out. These are the new cool kids on the block and although a relatively young company (since 2004) they have been involved in a number of cutting edge schemes that are transforming London, the UK, and Asia. Their talent lies in creating architecture that is modest, but also spectacular. This balance and subtlety is being nurtured under the directive of company founder Ken Shuttleworth, already famous for his work at Foster & Partners, and particularly of 'The Gherkin' fame. There is a bravery in Make’s designs, and at such early days these architects are definitely ones to watch.

We're delighted to be working with this well-known Japanese manufacturer of printers, projectors and scanners on a number of exciting ongoing projects.
It is interesting to note that the name Epson was derived from the idea of the company being the offspring ("son") of the EP-101, the world's smallest electronic printer (EP) which was created in 1964. To be working closely with one of the most respected and environmentally aware technology companies in the world is something we are very proud of.
From biodiversity projects in Portugal, to Digital Ice Technology, Epson have a very rich and deep approach to design, technology, the environment and social responsibility.

FIRA
Posted by: Keech on 30th Mar 2010 in Keechdesign News

We are very happy to have been asked to re-design the 110 sq.m. reception area at FIRA International's headquarters in Stevenage. It's a particularly interesting early 60s building, showing great use of pre-cast concrete and lots of exposed internal timber beams and detailing nearly all of which is still intact. It has a Scandinavian feel, and immediately reminded me in some way of Arne Jacobsen's masterpiece, St. Catherine's College at Oxford (which I was lucky enough to have been given a guided tour of by project architect Frank Lancaster, but that's another story...)

Just returned from a week on the set of Blade Runner. Actually people always make the analogy with Ridley Scott's masterpiece, but in reality Tokyo is far more civilized and easy to negotiate. Yes, it does feel frenetic, and there is more than enough neon, noise and high technology, not to mention subculture, counterculture and any other culture you care to mention. But learn to ride the subway and sort out your Shibuyas from your Shinjukus, and it becomes a user-friendly sort of a metropolis.
